expect, where their case will be heard, and who will oversee it. While
there are many variables that can affect the course of your case, some

When compared with court structures across the country, the state of
New Jersey has a fairly simple set-up. However, this doesn’t necessarily
mean the criminal courts and the processes involved within are easy to

If you are charged with a crime in Monmouth County, New Jersey, your
case will be heard at the Monmouth County Superior Court.
Within this courthouse, there are 28 judges and around 500 other
staff members. In the criminal division, there are six trial judges and
a drug court judge. There are several other professionals that are
fixtures within the court including team leaders, probation officers,
clerks, secretaries, and the like. When you are charged with a crime,
you will come in contact with many of these people. There is one
presiding criminal judge over the entire court that has responsibility
for the division. At the current time, that judge is the Honorable
Thomas F. Scully.
There is a drug court within the Monmouth County Superior Court. This
courtroom is set aside to specifically handle cases that involve drugs.
It was created to serve the unique needs of a drug offender and can
often result in defendants getting treatment for drug problems rather
than being locked up with no help at all.
You will come to this courthouse for issues of bail, pretrial
hearings, grand jury hearings, and a trial. The courthouse is open
during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m., though you will be made aware of what time you need to be
there beforehand. Sometimes, there may be hearings and meetings for
which your presence isn’t required. This is something to discuss with
your defense lawyer.
The Courthouse of the Monmouth Vicinage, as it is sometimes called,
is a bustling place that can be quite intimidating for the average
person. When you are accused of a criminal offense and facing legal
penalties, the added pressure certainly doesn’t help matters. Having
