New Jersey Criminal Mischief Laws
According to New Jersey criminal law, Criminal Mischief is
when someone knowingly damages the property of someone else without consent from
the owner. The punishment depends on what type of property was damaged and the
dollar value of the damage.

Criminal Mischief - Penalties in New Jersey
Criminal Mischief is a Disorderly Person’s Offense
if the damage to property was valued at less than $500 which means that a
conviction can result in up to 30 days jail, a fine of up to $500, restitution
for the price of the damage, probation and/or community service.
If the criminal Mischief damage was valued between $500
and $1,999 it is a fourth degree charge which could result in up to
18 months in prison.
If the criminal Mischief damage was valued at more than
$2,000 it is a third degree charge which could result in up to 5
years in prison.
Certain situations of Criminal Mischief are penalized more
severely under New Jersey Law. If your case involves tampering with a research
facility, an airport, a traffic sign, a grave, graffiti, or interference with
certain public services the penalty for your charge may be more severe than
